Yep, the MO and I got married on Valentine's Day. I am definitely not one of those Hallmark Holiday Haters ;-) (Besides, St. Valentine predates Hallmark by a long shot.) Anyhow, the MO, clever man that he is, has made a practice of following the traditional (and/or modern, when it suits him) anniversary list, which occasionally requires a stretch of the imagination but always leads to interesting presents.
This year, year 5, is wood. I should have known that if he could translate "appliance" for year 4 into a gun, it would be even easier to do the same for "wood" and sure enough, I now own the first rifle in the house that comes with its own bayonet :-) Indirectly, this is all the Layabout Sailor's fault, since I raved about shooting his Mosin-Nagant a year or so ago. The MO has a long memory when it comes to firearms....
So here is my anniversary present:
Time to come up with another gun name. I loooooove having that problem!
And not only that, he also bought awesome seats for Carmina Burana (O Fortuna, indeed!) and despite us both being a bit under the weather, we had our traditional Valentine's dinner tonight--splurge on a bottle of really good red wine and order in a pizza.
My husband rocks. Obv. I am a very happy and lucky woman :-)
Hee hee :-)
Update: For those who haven't been following this and thus have no idea why the box-cutters are funny, the original is finely fisked at The Smallest Minority.
Every now and then, Greywolf (grey2112@tampabay.rr.com) reprints the fabulous Kalashnikitty t-shirt. This is a must-have item! The MO and I each have one. The t-shirt quality is great--nice thick cotton--and the print has held up well over many many many washings. Herewith, the blurb:
OK, guys and gals, I have gotten a lot of emails in the past few months about people wanting Kalashnikitty shirts and have decided to do up another run. Since I first starting doing these 3 years ago, I have not had to change the pricing, even though every year my costs have gone up. I will keep the prices at what they were just for my buds on the gunboards.
Here's the procedure for getting the shirts (this makes it a LOT easier for me to track and ship these things ASAP)
Email me (grey2112@tampabay.rr.com) with the following:
1 - Number and sizes you want - sizes are Child's Medium, Child's Large, Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large, Adult XL, Adult 2XL, and Adult 3XL. Sorry, ladies - no "baby-doll" tees - just too expensive to retool for the shirt-maker.
2 - Your name and address
3 - How you would like to pay for them
Only one color - a light ash grey (very nice) - shirts are high-quality, do not fade or shrink, long lasting, very soft. Image is screen printed, NOT iron on or transfers.
Any size up to XL is $20, 2XL is $21.50 and 3XL is $22.00
Shipping via 2-3 day Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation is $5.00 for 1 shirt, and an extra $2.50 per shirt after that.
Check, MO, or Paypal is good for payments. If using Paypal, add 4% to the total payment, including the shipping.
** When you email me your order, include your full name and mailing address. I will email you back with the total.**
Taking orders until February 25th (Sunday night), and then the estimated ship date of the shirts will be the week of the 5th of MARCH - usually it takes about 3 weeks from the end of order-taking until the shirts start to ship, but last time it was very fast - you may get them just in time for Valentines Day!
Please email Greywolf directly! I'm not selling these or getting a commission or anything. I just think everybody should have one :-)
You *know* you want one....
Wheeee, the MO got a couple of video files from some nice young man who was also at the Colorado machine-gun shoot. (Note to self: find out the nice young man's name so I can thank him!)
I've put them up on box.net. You'll need QuickTime. This one is a longer and better version of the one of the MO that I posted earlier, and this one is me at the minigun--all the action is at the very end ;-) I'll tell you what, it felt like it lasted a lot longer than that!
[Okay! Finally! The Guns! Part 1 is here. Part 2 is here. This is The End. All the pix are here. Just the gun pix are here. But really, would a little romance and scenery kill ya?]
If it's Sunday, it must be time to GO SHOOT MACHINE GUNS!! We had a fabulous breakfast at The Cliff House (these
folks actually know how to make decent biscuits and gravy, and the potatoes are heavenly) and then headed east to Dragon Man's shooting range.
All I can say about this event (which is shockingly poorly advertised) is, if you have ANY interest in firearms WHATSOEVER, you NEED to participate. OMG, we shot all kinds of guns. And it was all AWESOME. For sheer "WOW" the minigun was the winner. (And oh yeah, it was so worth those prices.)
For, "Gee, I'd like to have one of these!" it was the Thompson .45 sub-machine gun. "Okay, that's a bit much" honors goes to the 50 cal. rifle, only because the muzzle brake sent so much noise backwards that it made my ears ring despite gummies and muffs. The MO, however, really liked shooting it mounted and automatic....
(I have an avi file of the MO shooting something else (7.62 somethingorother), but til I figure out how to host it not on youtube, you'll just have to wait.)
Sunday evening we had a terrific dinner at The Cliff House, and I had my second creme brulee in as many desserts! This one was a trio--classic vanilla, chicory coffee, and chocolate cinamon. The coffee won, with a close-fought second
to the vanilla. I was really surprised that the chocolate didn't win me over. Maybe it was just too rich. By focusing on dessert, I shouldn't detract from the dinner, which was likewise delicious. The MO had a really impressive wild boar tenderloin, and I had striped bass with two sauces--one black bean and one sweet onion. I couldn't even decide which one I liked the best....
Monday morning we finally had to wave good-bye to the incredible scenery, but I'll admit I was really looking forward to some humidity and oxygen. It was really surprising how easily we tired! I know my cardiovascular system is not world-class, but for heaven's sake, I do work out regularly, and walking across a parking lot really shouldn't reduce me to gasping. I think the low country is definitely where I'm supposed to be. So our kitties were glad to see us, and we have lots of laundry to do, and we took a lot of pictures.... I've loaded about half of them up to flickr. Enjoy :-)
I don't think a day at the range ever goes by without that sentiment being voiced at least once. Today was no different, but I really meant it this time. Because today my range-mates included a couple from Ireland who have no chance of repeating this experience once they return home. Carol Ann even commented that her friends were just horrified that she was going to shoot guns while she was here, because of course everyone there just knows that "guns are bad." I trust she will be able to report that she had fun and hasn't suddenly developed criminal tendencies ;-)
After several sessions at the pistol stations, we moved down to the rifle range, and I got a real treat as Jim let me join in shooting a couple of big rifles, even though I had neglected to bring Chester. I think I've decided something about rifles. With pistols, I really like my .22 and I very rarely shoot .357 with Ivan, preferring to stick with the .38. But with rifles, I have a sneaking suspicion that there might be something to the phrase "bigger is better." When I shot that Mosin Nagant 7.62, I admit I let out a "Woohoo!", and my grin lasted well beyond my five shots....
So, I had a great time (hard not to) and developed a new appreciation for the 2nd amendment. I mean, it's one thing to know that I can go buy a gun, get a concealed license, shoot pretty much any time I want, etc. But it's something else entirely to go shoot with someone who will never be able to do any of that unless they leave their home. Not just move across the street or to another state, but to a whole other country! It's really kind of mind-boggling.
So, yes. It's good to be an American. I think those founding fathers were really on to something....
I just discovered Tam's blog recently (I know, with an address like that, how did I miss it? three of my favorite things all in one link) and although I'm not counting myself even half as hard-core as she seems to be, I really liked this post: I ain't goin' out like that...
It's not a vigilante thing, or a tough-girl thing (my friends are all laughing their asses off right now at the notion of me being "tough") or even a power thing. It's more of a not-ceding-power thing.
