I logged on to flickr and found a comment on one of my gemstone pictures inviting me to add it to a new group, the Beryl Barrel (clever!) so of course I did, and poking around amongst the beauties there led me eventually to this picture, and I'm just stopping now because I don't think I can stand much more....

Awesome New Laptop Skin

I read about laptop skins on Read/Write Web, I think, and ended up at Decal Girl, where I purchased the decal you see above plus a cool nebula for my shuffle. The shuffle decal comes pre-cut, so applying it was easy, but the laptop one comes as a big 15x12 sheet. After a bit of manipulation, I got it nice and flat on my laptop, and then broke out the X-Acto to do a bit of customization. I'm VERY pleased with results :-)

The decal material is really nice--heavy and almost canvas-y. If you're patient, it's easy to smooth out the air bubbles, and it's kind of cool how indents show up through the material. The iPod logo on my shuffle and the Dell circle on the lid of my laptop both look really nice in bas-relief. I did lose some paint around the edge of my laptop cover pulling off the extraneous stuff that I cut off, but it's no worse than the regular wear and dings, so I guess that's okay. I really went for this whole thing because I put a HUGE gouge in the cover and now that's all nice and covered up, so mission accomplished! I'm sold on the whole concept, and if this one starts to peel up or whatever, I'll just get another one. I spend $20 on much stupider things on a regular basis ;-)
